initial thoughts on the comcast DVR (motorola dct-6412)
we decided to go ahead and upgrade to the comcast DVR service ($10 more a month and it replaces the digital cable box) as the first of many steps toward getting a new tv later this year (i hope). one of the big selling points was that it is a dual-tuner box and that it runs microsoft tv. a quick call to comcast last night and a 15 minute trip to the redmond comcast store later, we got the box home and hooked up. it took a few hours to populate the guide, but it was pretty easy to use from the beginning. we weren't really sure what to expect with this type of box because we knew it wouldn't look/behave like either the media center or the tivo boxes. it has a feel of the media center crossed with directv menus. i would recommend getting the comcast DVR service whether or not you plan on getting a high definition tv as it can be used with either.
likes:
* better looking box than the digital cable box in style and color
* dual tuners
* on demand menus do not suck
* it has a better picture than the old cable box
* i can actually watch stuff in dolby digital 5.1
* microsoft tv
complaints:
* i never really liked the directv menus/guide, so that is one of my biggest complaints (but not really a complaint at all)
* when you hit pause it sometimes takes a second or two to actually pause whereas the tivo and mce pause instantly
