First-Ever Seattle Heat Warning Issued
By DONNA GORDON BLANKINSHIP, Associated Press Writer
2 hours, 8 minutes ago
Make that an iced coffee. While the Northeast was bidding farewell to unseasonably chilly temperatures, Seattle residents dusted off the sunscreen and shorts Friday as the National Weather Service issued its first-ever heat advisory for the city.
The advisory covering the urban corridor from Tacoma north to Everett was prompted by a second day of record temperatures. Thursday's high temperature of 89 degrees at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport broke a 58-year-old record. A high of 87 was forecast for Friday.
Phyllis Cameron, 92, planned to keep cool with lots of iced tea and a few gin-and-tonics. "I'm just going to enjoy it on the chaise on my deck," said the lifelong Seattle resident.
The weather service, however, was advising that people should drink lots of water, stay indoors and out of the sun, and check on relatives and neighbors.
The advice didn't seem to be taking. Winter-pale flesh was on display in the city's parks, and the streets were packed with people drinking iced coffee instead of Seattle's trademark lattes.
Seattle is among the cities added this year to the weather service's excessive heat program. A heat advisory means conditions could lead to heat stress in some people and a warning indicates a higher possibility that people will get sick or die.
The organizers of the annual Northwest Folklife music festival welcomed the heat, which boosted attendance for the normally slow first day. Concertgoers crowded into Seattle Center, enjoying the music, the sun and a giant fountain shooting cool water 120 feet into the air.
Last year it rained, said Rafael Maslan, 20, a festival board member.
Meanwhile, residents in the Northeast were basking in the sun Friday after several days of rain, blustery winds and temperatures in the 40s and 50s. It was the third coldest May on record for New England, the National Weather Service said.
well, maybe not for there, but it is for here. we're sitting on 88 degrees at sea-tac right now. UGH! it hasn't been this hot since august, and we are normally in the 60s this time of year. :|
we broke down and saw it today. it was a lot better than i expected. i still love episode 5 (empire) the most. 3 was great at wrapping up all of the loose ends though.
while we were at the movie, some eBay bidders actually paid! the last few days people have been really lagging at paying up. adam even had to leave negative feedback for one person. oh well, i guess that's all part of being on eBay!
i am considering using some of the eBay money to buy a new smartphone. the audiovox is supposed to be hella cool. it is FAST FAST FAST. :) we will see...
you know, i didn't like kendra very much until the last task. i was horrified by how tana treated her team. kendra really shined. i had also been impressed by the whole pontiac brochure earlier too. i am quite glad that she won. :)
i had lunch with jason and hung out and chatted. i found more crap to ebay, and i sold my craptop for a $150 BIN. that's gonna go to the dentist on monday for some of my xrays, but at least that is one more item i don't have to look at in this apartment!!!!
dr cheung (and his staff) is AWESOME! i have my new filling in. it took 2 xanax, double novacaine, and nitrous oxide to get me through it, but dammit it is done. my tooth feels fine now, but my jaw is really sore from holding my mouth open really wide for an hour. i hope that it feels better in the morning.
my dentist appointment to get my filling fixed/redone is in 8 hours. :/
9 am: breakfast
11-1 pm: mani/pedi at paule attar
1-2 pm: lunch at canyons
2-4:30 pm: prepare for wedding
4:30-5:15 pm: wedding
5:15-6 pm: change clothes and relax
6-8 pm: drive out to duvall to check it out, go to bellevue square to get new watch battery for leslie
8-10 pm: dinner at daniel's broiler (the BEST FREAKING STEAK EVER!!!!!)
it was a good day, but i can't say that i'm sad that it's over. :)
yay tomorrow yay!
i just did the BSS 3 complete body sculpting DVD about an hour ago, and i can already feel it in my arms. yikes, i NOW remember how sore i was when i first started it back in january. i modified the leg press to just do it on the 6" box instead of the 14" until i can determine how my knee and ankle will react. i guess we'll probably see tomorrow. :D
yay for flossing your teeth! it is much less painful now that i got a really good cleaning the other day. getting some good tips from the awesome dental hygenist, jill, helped too. :) i have now flossed every night since getting my teeth cleaned on tuesday. that is a HUGE HUGE HUGE accomplishment for me.
after having my tanzanite removed from the ring it was in (because i had knocked it loose in its original channel setting), i had it put into a pendant. the same jeweler that reset my solitaire did this custom setting. he rules. anyway, here's how it turned out. i am very pleased. i think that it's the perfect size (8x6 mm)to be worn as a pendant. i am also pleased that i had a chain that it fit on. :D
after months of screwing around, i am getting back on program tomorrow morning. period. i will start by being pizza free for at least 1 week. of course that means that i ate pizza tonight. >:)
i'm also going to start with my firm DVDs again on monday. :D
i just got off of the phone with american airlines. we are now ticketed to go to denver on alaska airlines on july 15 for chris and susie's wedding. :)
yesterday, i went to paule attar and had my gel nail coverings removed. while my natural nails are really weak, i was getting sick of them always breaking. so, now i will just do manicures for a while.
today, i began the day by going to see dr yen. he said that things looked ok. at this time, we're not going to go for more aggressive treatment. we'll just see how it goes. i should keep wearing the orthotics and wear the brace as needed. i can resume my higher intensity activities! YAY!
after that, i went to the dentist. i had to take a xanax because i was terrified. i survived the x-rays and the cleaning. it turns out that i have been having a little bit of sensitivity in one of my two fillings because it is cracked. evidently amalgam expands and contracts because it is metal. based on the location of the cavity that had been filled, the use of amalgam, and using the tooth (a molar) for chewing, it was pretty much a matter of time before it needed to be replaced. so, i have an appointment for the 16th at 8am to get it fixed. insurance will cover over half of the cost at least. they would have covered more, but the doctor's office does not use amalgam, so i will have to essentially pay more for the composite material. at least it will look better than the amalgam. so, if you have dental anxiety and live in the seattle area, i would recommend dr cheung in kirkland!
i also took my tanzanite in to the jewelers yesterday to have it reset into a pendant. it will be by itself in a 4 prong basket setting. it should be pretty. i am so happy that i will have the stone in a secure setting again.
creighton is married (scary)
my parents gave me my grandmother's (dad's mom) wedding band. it is now my new pinky ring. they said she would be happy that i have it and that i am wearing it. she died in mid-1976, so i didn't get to really know her. :( evidently, dad looks like her (except for the fact that she was short!) so that means i do too. :D
everything was beautiful. casey, as always, was stunning. everybody was happy. :)
it was good to see my ENTIRE family. it was also cool to meet audrie and ava for the first time. ava scares me because i am afraid of breaking her, but they were both a lot of fun.
wow. it was a busy, busy weekend.
first of all, you can see a few pictures here
so, i guess i will start with the tyler airport. it is not quite 3 years old, and it is really pretty. it is also realllllly small. 4 gates for small jets and turbo props only small. only american eagle and continental's regional planes fly there. it is so small that after we got our boarding passes (can't even do those through a kiosk small), we had to sit for 30 minutes to wait to be able to go through security. they don't let you go through security until like 20 minutes before you board the plane. it was funny, cute, and sad all at the same time.
tyler is a nice little town. it seems that the big thing to do there is eat because there are like 234525234235234 restaurants, both chain restaurants and little local places.
so, here was the condensed schedule...
thurs night - arrive and eat at on the border with parents, hang out with creighton until 2am at the hotel (our room was across the hall from his)
fri - breakfast at 9, pedicure with bride/moms/bridesmaids at 10, mall to check on tuxes, rehearsal at 6, rehearsal dinner at 7:30
sat - bridal breakfast at 8, hair/makeup at 10, lunch with groomsmen at 12, back to the church at 1:15, dressed soon after, pictures with bride then groomsmen and family at 2:30, ceremony at 4, reception at 4:30-8, dinner with parents and grahams at 9
sun - breakfast with the harrelsons at 9:30, dropped off tuxes at 12, random wandering around tyler for most of the afternoon, left for the airport at 4:30, arrived home at 11:15 pm
