technology review: cingular 2125 (aka HTC faraday)

it's a great little phone. here's my take on it after having it for almost a week.

  • on the physical design - the bulge that is on the top to accomodate an antenna that makes it a quad-band phone is a little annoying. they also added a spot to loop a phone strap through on the bottom. the lack of a spot for a phone strap was a huge complaint of mine with the audiovox. i was pleased to see that it still uses the minisd cards.

  • on windows mobile 2003 vs windows mobile 5.0 - the phone has the same speed processor as the audiovox smt5600 (HTC typhoon) but the introduction of windows mobile 5.0 makes it feel different/faster. i miss the list layout on 2003 versus the big icons in 5.0. i like how there is now a clock that appears on the lock screen.

  • on the new display - the smt5600 had a nice display for a phone, but the 2125 is just beautiful. i've got a PDA screen protector on it to keep it from getting scratched, so that takes away some of the beauty, but i'd rather lose a bit of the brilliance than a majorly scratched display.

  • on EDGE vs GPRS - it is faster, but i don't think that i would upgrade just based on that fact. it doesn't seem to find pages any faster, but it does seem to load them faster.

  • on the supposed inclusion of mobile version of microsoft apps - when i read that, i thought it was supposed to be the addition of pocket word and pocket excel. the demo phone in the store didn't have it on it (unlike the pocketpc models that are pre-installed), i thought it might be on the included cd. well, clearvue is on the cd, but i would hardly call that a mobile version of microsoft apps.

when i got it, there was a $100 mail-in rebate, so it made it a pretty good deal (except for getting tied in to a new 2-year contract). cingular has a $150 ETF, so getting the phone for a lower price plus a rebate plus paying an ETF if necessary would still make it less expensive than if i had to pay full retail for the phone (approx $399). if you're in the market for a new phone, especially a smartphone, i would really recommend it. it's a nice device that is jam packed with great features and still manages to be small.

    nummy christmas dinner

we went over to jodi and richard's for christmas dinner. it was gooooooood (except for the sweet potatoes). ;) jodi made way too much food as usual, but it will all make good leftovers. the most evil thing was the plethora of cheddar bay biscuits (like those from red lobster). evil jodi.

a couple of movie reviews: memoirs of a geisha and munich

it's been a busy weekend for movies, so here's my take on 2 of them...

we saw memoirs of a geisha on friday. it was a beautiful movie with the roles well-cast. the sets were beautiful (most were man-made on a lot while some were at japanese gardens), and it was pretty close to the book (from what i remember when i read it a few years ago). my only complaint was that there were a couple of people that talked through the entire movie.

on saturday we saw munich. it is another excellent movie that begins with a horrible event. i think it was also well-cast. watching a strong character sink into paranoia was a moving experience. eric bana was awesome in the role. though i knew it wasn't going to be a happy movie, it so wasn't a happy movie. it was worth the 3 hours that we sat in the theater.

    back to the dentist

the dentist wanted to check and see how my teeth whitening was going. they were happy because i already have a few shades difference on my top teeth. my bottom teeth aren't as white (they weren't as white to begin with), so they suggested that i do the bottom a few more times before i do the top again. i'm going to do 1 more tube, and that should probably do it for another 9 mo-year. i'll still have a couple of tubes left, so i'm pleased with that. i think that i've really gotten my money's worth for this whole thing. YAY!

    why randal why?

to express my disgust with the apprentice, i have decided to express my disappointment in a different manner!

    dear randal,

you played the game with integrity and with respect for others. after you were hired, you showed a totally different side and the audience reacted accordingly. you lost some of that respect that you had worked to hard to earn and keep. encouraging trump to also hire rebecca would have made you look even better. i wonder if people will see you the same way now. you had said many times how great she was, but when you had the opportunity to also see her rewarded, you took all of the glory for yourself. shame on you. that just wasn't right.

    THE END

    comcast is ass

the cablemodem and cable was out (thereby also taking down the vonage) for 10 hours today. yes, that would be 10 hours. they gave me a service credit for 3 days of service. at least i got something, but it sucked... a lot. at least it came back up before the apprentice finale tonight and the oc!

    the calm after the storm

yesterday was a good day. adam had a great day at work and it was much more relaxing. my floor mats also arrived, and i quickly remembered how nice mine looked when i got them almost 6 years ago.

today, i went and had a facial which was ok. i just tried to chill out a little bit more. the last week has been crazy with appointment after appointment.

tomorrow, i need to try to focus on the CAPM stuff for next week. i can reschedule the exam, but i have to make the decision to do that tomorrow. i'll probably just suck it up and do it regardless just to be done with it. if i don't pass, i will be out the $300 fee but it wouldn't be the end of the world. i feel that way especially since i want to be in a totally different occupation.

    crappy day

so, yesterday the battery light was coming on in my car. adam grabbed the multimeter and deduced that it was a failing alternator. the car went in to kirkland honda today, and it turns out that it was the alternator. soooooo, after a few hours and $500, i have a new alternator.

after i got the car back, i had to go to the doctor for my annual exam. my, oh my it was oh so fun. at least it's only once a year. the doctor is switching me from depo to seasonale because the doctor thinks that depo is the reason why i'm so hungry to frequently thus putting on weight. i guess we'll see.

    BLAH!

    torture

i am being tortured. adam is making me watch the full 12-part r.kelly trapped in the closet video that arrived from netflix yesterday. it's like 40 minutes long. kill me now.

    got my hair cut

jaime rocked yet again. i'm really happy with the cut. she brought the back up to be closer in length to the front.

    life and whatnot

i met with the store manager at *store which will not be named*. she thinks that i'd be a great fit. now we just have to wait until she has an open position. they have EXTREMELY low turnover, but my gut feeling is that they will lose somebody either later this month or by the middle of january. retail can be really tough. it's a lot harder than what people think especially at high-end stores like *store which will not be named*. she said she'd keep in touch, so that is a really good thing. i really want to work there. the whole 1:1 thing sounded very promising. it just seems like a matter of time now.

on the tooth front, i did another hour on top and bottom with the whitening trays. i might need to trim the very inside of the lower one because it gets too close to the bottom of my mouth and then i start to freak out. i did keep it in for the whole hour though.

i also went in to the movado boutique to get the band on my red watch replaced (as part of their extended warranty). they had to order the band, so it won't be in for about 10 or so days. at least it is a quick swap once i get into the store after they call me.

now that i've taken care of the orthodontist, dentist, and *store which will not be named* interview, maybe i'll be able to get a full night of sleep. i have been waking up way early every day this week. i think that my brain just has too much stuff going on to stay asleep. all i know is that i'm extremely tired.

    December 6, 2005

    survived!

i was able to do a full hour on both my top and bottom teeth! YAY ME!

    back to the dentist

i went back to dr cheung's office today to pick up my custom whitening trays. i had them in for about a minute or two at the office. after i got home, i decided to try wearing them for a little bit without any of the whitening gel just to see if i could handle it. thankfully, i learned at the dentist's office that i should only do 1 at a time (if i didn't gag so easily, i could do both at once). as of right now, i've had the top one in for about 30 mins. they said ideally, you wear them for about an hour per day. she said that if i need to do less, i can; however, i should be careful to wear the top and the bottom trays for the same amount of time so that the bleaching will be even for my top and bottom teeth. i'm glad, however, that i am doing this with the dentist because i think that having custom trays are much better than what you'd be able to get at the store - a better fit means better coverage which means better results. YAY!

    December 5, 2005

    got lots of info today

adam and i went in for a consultation with dr neal, an orthodontist, this morning. they said that i could use invisalign instead of regular braces and it would only take about 6 months of treatment. the costs associated with that are pretty low because insurance covers a huge chunk of it. adam would need either invisalign or braces for about a year or so. it's a lot more money for him because of the duration and needing correction on top and bottom, but it breaks out to be a reasonable amount when you pay monthly instead of all at once.

also, i talked to the manager of *store which will not be named*. she and i are going to chat on wednesday afternoon. there aren't a lot of people that they are even going to talk to, so that's pretty cool. i have to think that with a staff of about 80 people, there's going to be some turnover pretty quickly here after christmas or whatever.

the early morning announcement for today

hi jodi! you are old! happy birthday!!!

    the trip to the vet

i took zen to the vet to get her eyes looked at again. the cataract in her right eye is a little bit bigger, but the vet wasn't really concerned because she's an indoor only cat. they want to see her back 2x a year instead of the normal 1 time so that they can monitor the growth. if it gets bad, i will just need to take her to the animal eye specialists that are in kirkland so they can do cataract removal surgery. i'm happy that she's ok. after all, she is my baby. :D

    snow!

    pretty snow!

oh yeah, fedex actually showed up at my door this morning. yay for nice fedex chick!
